Q. I've never played soccer before, how do I learn to play?
A. The Defiance Strikers coaches work with the players to teach proper soccer skills. The Defiance Soccer Association also hosts a summer soccer camp annually at Riverside Park. We bring in players and coaches associated with Major League Soccer or local college soccer programs.
The Defiance Area YMCA has youth soccer programs, which also provides a learning environment. The YMCA programs are held outdoors in the fall and indoors in the spring.
Q. How do I tryout for the Strikers?
A.
Tryouts are held in June/July
each year. The teams are then put
together
for the fall and spring seasons.
Q. What equipment do I need to play soccer?
A. Generally a good pair
of soccer shoes and shin guards will get you started. The Defiance Strikers
provide the jerseys and will also make arrangements for you to purchase
appropriate shorts and socks to match the Strikers uniform.
Q. How much does it cost to play soccer for the Strikers?
A. The costs associated with league play are subject to change. Participation in the league allows us to provide a competitive soccer learning experience. However, we try to keep the costs reasonable so that more boys and girls are able to enjoy the sport of soccer.
We raise funds for the program through concession
sales during the soccer season. These monies are then used to purchase
jerseys, balls, and practice equipment. Our volunteer coaches and directors
take care of the playing fields while the Defiance City Parks and Recreation
Department maintain the park facilities.
Q. How many different teams are there?
A. The Strikers try to put a team in as many age groups as possible for both boys and girls. The number of players available for each age group decides the number of teams. The age groups are from U-9 to U-14. After that age generally a player will be eligible to play high school soccer.
